Morena opens registration for 2027 gubernatorial candidates

Mexico's ruling Morena party began a hybrid registration process on 22 June for aspirants to the 17 governorships that will be contested in the 2027 mid‑term elections. Registrations run through 27 June at the World Trade Center in Mexico City and online, with each day dedicated to a block of states.

Candidates must resign any public office, submit a sworn statement confirming no criminal record, no recent domestic‑violence or corruption convictions, and no recent debt obligations. The party also imposes a ban on expensive advertising, billboards and the use of public resources. Several Morena legislators have applied for leave to take part in the process.

The internal selection will involve surveys by the National Electoral Commission and external polling firms, with a maximum of six pre‑candidates per state – four from Morena, one from the Green Ecologist Party (PVEM) and one from the Labor Party (PT). Disagreements over joint candidacies have emerged, notably in San Luis Potosí where the PVEM proposes a candidate linked by marriage to the incumbent governor, a move Morena says breaches its anti‑nepotism rule.
