Mexico's Profeco issues safe public Wi‑Fi guidelines

Mexico's consumer protection agency, the Procuraduría Federal del Consumidor (Profeco), released a set of recommendations for using public Wi‑Fi networks safely. The guidance uses a traffic‑light system: green‑rated networks require a password and are considered trustworthy, while yellow‑rated connections lack a password and should be used with caution because the provider is unknown. Profeco advises users to avoid suspicious or duplicate SSIDs, refrain from saving passwords in browsers, always log out of accounts, avoid online purchases on unsecured networks, and verify that websites display the security padlock icon.

The agency stresses that these measures apply to Wi‑Fi offered in airports, hotels, plazas and other public venues to protect personal and banking information.
