Mexico's Profeco releases consumer guidance for vehicle rentals and hotel bookings
The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) issued recommendations to help vacationers contract vehicle rental services safely. It urges users to verify that rental providers have registered their adhesion contracts with Profeco, read all contract clauses, understand cancellation policies, insurance coverage, and keep detailed records of the vehicle’s condition at delivery. Consumers must notify providers and authorities immediately in case of accidents, theft, or other incidents, and retain all documentation for potential claims.
Profeco also published advice for hiring lodging services, stressing that providers may not cancel reservations without offering an alternative, re‑programming, or a full refund. Travelers should keep payment receipts, reservation numbers, and all communications, and can request Profeco’s mediation through tools such as Conciliaexpres and Concilianet. Complaints must be filed within one year of the service date.
Both sets of guidelines aim to ensure transparent, fair commercial relations and empower Mexican consumers to assert their rights during the holiday season.
