Mexico's public hospitals grapple with capacity overload and infrastructure decay

The Hospital General Dr. Manuel Gea González, a key referral center of the Mexican Secretaría de Salud, has become overwhelmed, with occupancy 149% above its designed capacity. Specialty appointments are now being scheduled up to 2027, and the outpatient clinic is limited to 100 patients per day as resources and staff shortages persist.

At the Hospital General de Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas, Director Francisco Ochoa Jiménez warned that critical infrastructure such as drainage, medical‑gas networks and sterilization areas requires urgent investment. He appealed to the hospital patronage and the wider community, while coordinating with IMSS‑Bienestar to improve equipment and expand care for the local population.
