Morena launches internal registration for 2027 gubernatorial coordinators

On 22 June 2026 the coalition of Morena, the Labour Party (PT) and the Green Ecologist Party (PVEM) opened the first round of registrations for state‑level coordinators of the “Defence of the Transformation” in Mexico. The process is being conducted at the World Trade Center in Mexico City and will run until 27 June, with aspirants from Aguascalientes, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche and other states submitting documentation and signing commitment letters confirming they have no criminal, debt‑or‑nepotism issues.

Candidates will be screened by Morena’s internal election commission, headed by Citlalli Hernández, and later evaluated through a public opinion poll scheduled after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The poll will determine which of the registered aspirants become the coalition’s gubernatorial candidates for the 17 states that will hold elections in 2027.

Among the early registrants are mayor‑turned‑candidate Ismael Burgueño Ruiz (Baja California), former Los Cabos mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez (Baja California Sur), PVEM leader Ernesto Núñez Aguilar (Michoacán) and several legislators and local officials. Party leaders, including national president Ariadna Montiel, stressed the need for unity, gender parity and adherence to the anti‑nepotism filter introduced by the new leadership.

The internal race is seen as a critical step for the governing bloc, as the outcome will shape the party’s prospects in a nationwide contest for 17 governorships, numerous municipal offices and state congresses in 2027.
