Mexico's Education Ministry Sets 2026‑27 School Calendar

Mexico’s Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) released its proposed calendar for the 2026‑27 school year. Classes for pre‑school, primary and secondary students are slated to begin on 31 August 2026, with teachers returning a week earlier on 24 August for preparatory sessions. The cycle will run for the legally required 185 instructional days and end on 9 July 2027 for students (13 July 2027 for teacher‑training schools).

The calendar includes two main vacation periods – winter break from 21 December 2026 to 8 January 2027 and Holy‑Week break from 22 March to 2 April 2027 – plus several official holiday suspensions (e.g., 16 September Independence Day, 2 November Day of the Dead, 16 November Revolution, 1 February Constitution, 15 March Benito Juárez, 5 May Puebla). Monthly Consejo Técnico Escolar (CTE) meetings will suspend classes on designated Fridays. Pre‑inscriptions for the following 2027‑28 cycle are scheduled for 2‑12 February 2027. The proposal awaits formal publication in the Diario Oficial de la Federación. Several states, including Coahuila, are awaiting the final federal decree before confirming local schedules.
