Mexico's Sheinbaum demands US proof of alleged CJNG campaign financing
President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters that no evidence has been presented linking the Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG) to financing of Mexican political campaigns, and she asked the United States to provide any proof supporting the claim. She noted that the individuals and companies named in the U.S. Treasury’s sanctions were already under investigation by Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit.
The U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned 11 subjects – two individuals and nine firms – for involvement in a fuel‑theft (huachicol) network tied to the CJNG, accusing them of cross‑border smuggling, falsifying customs documents and using shell companies to launder roughly $7 billion for the cartel. Sheinbaum highlighted her administration’s anti‑huachicol actions, including customs monitoring, tax‑authority checks, detentions and account freezes, and criticized the U.S. for issuing the sanctions without sharing substantive evidence.
