Mexico's Sheinbaum pushes for lower auto tariffs in upcoming TMEC talks

President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government will keep negotiating with the United States to cut automobile tariffs that Mexican manufacturers say put them at a disadvantage against Japan and South Korea. She announced a second round of TMEC (US‑Mexico‑Canada) talks in Washington on June 16‑17, led by Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and joined by other Mexican officials.

The agenda focuses on the U.S. demand that at least 50 % of a vehicle’s value be produced in the United States, a rule that could disrupt North‑American supply chains. The negotiations will also address agricultural issues and fair‑competition provisions. Although former President Trump has publicly questioned renewing the pact, the treaty remains in force until 2036, with discussions now centred on extending its term and updating rules.

Sheinbaum emphasized that higher vehicle prices in the United States create an incentive for tariff reductions and warned that the auto sector’s growth depends on predictable trade rules. She described the TMEC as one of Trump’s major achievements and expressed confidence that the agreement will be maintained.
