Mexico's Sonora and Sinaloa face extreme heat and heavy rains on July 9

On July 9, 2026 the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa are expected to experience an intense heat wave, with temperatures reaching up to 45 °C in parts of Sonora. The forecast also calls for very strong to extremely strong rains, thunderstorms, lightning and hail, especially in central, eastern and southeastern Sonora and in northern and central Sinaloa.

The weather is being driven by low‑pressure systems, cyclonic circulations aloft and the arrival of tropical waves 16 and 17. Rainfall could produce flash flooding, urban water‑logging, landslides and rapid rises in river levels. Strong southerly winds of 30‑40 km/h with gusts to 70 km/h are also projected, raising the risk of reduced visibility and damage from falling objects. Authorities advise residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure and take precautions in areas prone to severe precipitation, lightning or strong winds.
