Mexico records 34% of early‑2026 femicides in four states, while State of Mexico logs new gender‑based political‑violity

A national report shows that four Mexican entities—Sinaloa, the State of México, Chiapas and Ciudad de México—accounted for 107 of the 315 femicide victims recorded in the first half of 2026, representing 34% of the total. Sinaloa led with 42 cases (13.3% of the national count), followed by the State of México (24), Chiapas (21) and Ciudad de México (20). The municipality of Culiacán alone recorded 29 femicides, the highest for any city, and the national femicide rate stood at 2.59 victims per 100,000 women.

In the same period, the State of México’s electoral gender‑coordinating unit reported seven new complaints of political violence against women and five additional sanctions placed in the INE’s Registry of Persons Sanctioned for Gender‑Based Political Violence. The complaints involved harassment, image manipulation, denial of resources and other discriminatory actions against female officials. The unit conducted 47 investigative diligences, while the national registry now lists 511 cases, with 26 linked to the State of México.
