Mexico femicide and gender‑based violence

In early July 2026, authorities in Sinaloa reported a new homicide and the first femicide of the month, highlighting continuing local violence against women. By late July, a national report showed that four Mexican jurisdictions—Sinaloa, the State of México, Chiapas and Mexico City—accounted for roughly one‑third of all femicide victims recorded in the first half of 2026. Sinaloa led with 42 cases, followed by the State of México (24), Chiapas (21) and Mexico City (20). The municipality of Culiacán alone recorded 29 femicides, the highest city tally. The report also detailed a rise in gender‑based political violence in the State of México, noting seven new complaints and five additional sanctions related to harassment, image manipulation and resource denial against female officials, bringing the national registry to 511 cases. Together, the snapshots depict a widening pattern of lethal gender‑based crimes and political harassment across Mexico, with Sinaloa remaining a focal point of femicide activity.
