State of Mexico launches coordinated audits of all 125 municipalities
The State of Mexico's superior audit office (OSFEM) and the federal audit agency (ASF) have signed a coordination agreement to jointly audit the 125 municipalities of the state. The 2025‑2026 audit program includes 196 integral audits that will cover every municipality, and a total of 179 audits are scheduled for 2026 – the highest number in the last seven years. Each municipality manages roughly 70 billion pesos annually from federal and state sources, making the oversight of public spending a substantial undertaking.
Officials highlighted that the key challenge is not merely conducting audits but ensuring that findings lead to sanctions and the recovery of misused resources, thereby strengthening accountability and combating corruption across the state's public finances.
