Mexico's Tax Authority Denies Cyberattack and Targets Phantom Companies

The Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT) said it has found no unauthorized access or anomalous behavior in its systems, rejecting reports that a hacker stole 195 million taxpayer and voter records. The agency emphasized continuous monitoring and compliance with ISO/IEC 27000 standards, stating, "no ha detectado accesos ilegítimos ni comportamiento anómalo en la operación de sus sistemas."

In a separate announcement, SAT and the Instituto Mexicano de Contadores Públicos warned of a resurgence in phantom firms used to issue false tax receipts. They reported restrictions on digital seals for about 7,300 taxpayers linked to such entities and highlighted over 14,000 contributors appearing in related registries. The SAT urged companies to review their accounting monthly, quoting IMCP adviser Ramón Ortega: "No participen en estos esquemas que muchas veces se venden como estrategias fiscales, pero no son estrategias fiscales, son delitos fiscales."
