Mexico's Yucatán and Baja California Sur demand federal review of tourism projects

The government of Yucatán formally requested the federal environmental agencies Semarnat and Profepa to verify compliance with federal authorizations for the "Las Dunas" tourism development in Chuburná, Progreso. State conditions require protection of more than 45,700 sqm of coastal wetland, 2,880 sqm of maritime zone, and the local mangrove habitat, prohibiting any alteration of these areas.

In Baja California Sur, a petition on Change.org gathered over 11,000 signatures urging Semarnat to reject a land‑use change for the "El Saltito" project near La Paz. The proposal would clear about 110 ha of desert vegetation that hosts thousands of cacti, cardones and protected species, including 880 threatened biznagas. Opponents argue the mitigation plan is insufficient and have organized a protest march.

Both states are pressing federal authorities to enforce environmental safeguards before the tourist developments proceed.
