Mexico's May Exports to the United States Reach Record $54 B

In May 2026 Mexico exported goods worth $54.18 billion to the United States, the highest monthly figure on record. The cumulative value of Mexican exports to the U.S. from January through May reached $242.9 billion, while imports from the United States totaled $33.05 billion, giving a bilateral trade volume of $404.6 billion – also a historic high.

The shipments represent 16.5 % of total U.S. trade, keeping Mexico as the United States’ largest trading partner ahead of Canada, China and Taiwan. Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard attributed the surge to Mexico’s preferential market access under the United StatesMexico‑Canada Agreement (T‑MEC) and its low average tariff of 3.65 % compared with the global average of 6.74 %.

The record comes as the United States continues to impose higher tariffs on many countries, while maintaining the existing T‑MEC framework through annual reviews until its 2036 expiration. In the same month, the U.S. trade deficit widened by 42.2 % to $77.6 billion, the largest monthly shortfall in 14 months.
