Global EV market shifts as Chinese manufacturers expand

The global electric vehicle market is undergoing significant shifts as Chinese manufacturers expand their international presence. In August 2026, global plug-in vehicle sales reached 1.83 million units, a 2 percent increase year-over-year. While China saw an 11 percent decrease in monthly sales compared to the previous year, its electric vehicle market share remains above 60 percent. Conversely, Europe reported a 36 percent increase in sales for the same period.

Chinese tech and automotive giants are launching aggressive new models. MG's new MG 07 fastback has seen massive demand in China, securing 42,000 orders within 20 days of its launch. Geely is also expanding its lineup, introducing the EX5 SUV with structural updates and the E2 compact SUV, which aims to compete in the budget segment with prices starting around 19,990 euros in Germany. Additionally, Huawei has entered the luxury SUV market through a joint venture with BAIC, presenting the Stelato G9 with a range of up to 1,366 kilometers.

European manufacturers are responding to this competition with new technology and diverse powertrain strategies. Volvo has introduced Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology via software updates for the EX30, allowing the vehicle to power external electrical equipment. In the heavy transport sector, Volvo Trucks has begun serial production of the FH Aero Electric, a long-haul truck capable of over 700 kilometers of range and rapid charging capabilities.
