Chinese automotive brands expand presence in Argentina
The Argentine automotive market is experiencing a significant transformation driven by the expansion of Chinese brands and the rise of electrified mobility. The inaugural Expo Auto Chino will take place from October 2 to 4 at BA Ferial in Buenos Aires, featuring 26 brands including BAIC, Chery, Geely, and MG. Major financial and insurance players are supporting this shift; Santander will serve as the exclusive bank offering financing for new vehicles, while La Caja has joined as a main sponsor and preferred insurer, specifically updating its coverage to include electric vehicle components like batteries and charging cables.
Chinese manufacturers are diversifying their offerings beyond passenger cars into commercial segments. Chery, through its brands Rely and Karry, is focusing on light commercial vehicles and pickups, such as the Rely R8. Similarly, MG has expanded its local lineup by launching internal combustion engine (ICE) versions of the ZS SUV alongside its hybrid models.
In the regional market, BYD is expanding its footprint into Patagonia, establishing a new presence in Neuquén through Movilidad del Futuro SAS to promote electrified mobility and infrastructure. Data indicates that hybrid and electric vehicles represented 15.2% of light vehicle registrations in Argentina during the first half of 2026, with Chinese brands accounting for 88% of that segment. Leading hybrid models in the country include the Ford Territory, Toyota Corolla Cross, and various models from BAIC and BYD.
