Michael Haneke retirement announced alongside Portuguese film retrospective

Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke has retired from making films at the age of 85, according to director Markus Schleinzer. To celebrate his career, a comprehensive retrospective of his work will take place in Portugal starting September 17.

Organized by Leopardo Filmes and Medeia Filmes, the event will visit several cities, including Lisbon, Porto, Braga, Coimbra, Figueira da Foz, and Setúbal. The program includes films that have not previously had commercial releases in Portugal, such as his first feature, ‘The Seventh Continent’ (1989), as well as ‘Benny’s Video’ (1992) and ‘71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance’ (1994).

The retrospective will also feature his acclaimed works like ‘Funny Games’ (1997), ‘Code Unknown’ (2000), ‘The Piano Teacher’ (2001), ‘Time of the Wolf’ (2003), ‘Caché’ (2005), ‘Funny Games U.S.’ (2007), ‘The White Ribbon’ (2009), ‘Amour’ (2012), and his final film ‘Happy End’ (2017). Additionally, several of his earlier television works will be screened.
