Michael Mann's Heat 2 sequel moves forward with Mexico scouting and casting uncertainty

Director Michael Mann confirmed that location scouting for the sequel to his 1995 crime thriller is underway in Mexico, posting on Instagram the caption “HEAT 2 – LOCATION SCOUTING IN MEXICO.” He added that filming is targeted to begin on August 3, stating, “No picture happens until it’s happening… right now we’re looking to start August 3.” Production is expected to continue through 2027, though an official release date has not been set.

Casting remains unsettled. Reports say Leonardo DiCaprio is undecided between playing the young version of criminal Neil McCauley or the thief Chris Shiherlis, a choice that could affect Adam Driver’s potential role as antagonist Otis Wardell. Other actors linked to the project include Christian Bale as a young detective, Jason Clarke, and rumors involving Adam Driver, Stephen Graham and Austin Butler, none of which have been confirmed.
