Heat 2 production advances with expanded cast

Michael Mann’s sequel-prequel to the 1995 crime classic, Heat 2, is advancing under Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists. Following Warner Bros.’ withdrawal due to budget concerns, the project is now estimated to cost between $150 million and $170 million, potentially making it Mann’s most expensive project to date. Amazon MGM aims for a $500 million worldwide return and is already planning a third installment, Heat 3, though it is unclear if that will be a direct sequel or a spin-off.

Production is slated to begin in California in November 2026, supported by a $40 million state tax credit. The film will also feature locations in Chicago, Paraguay, and Singapore. Michael Mann confirmed the film will receive a traditional theatrical release, targeting approximately 4,000 U.S. theaters for at least 45 days. Sony will manage international distribution.

Casting has expanded beyond leads Leonardo DiCaprio (Chris Shiherlis) and Christian Bale (Vincent Hanna). Adam Driver, Stephen Graham, and Jason Clarke remain attached, while Odessa Young is in negotiations to play Charlene Shiherlis. Additionally, newcomer María Cid is reportedly the top choice for the role of Gabi, daughter of Neil McCauley. The screenplay, based on Mann and Meg Gardiner’s 2022 novel, has been trimmed to roughly 190 pages and will blend flashbacks with present-day action across the years 1988, 1995, and 2000.
