Thialu Guiotti elected president of Goiânia City Council
Thialu Guiotti (Avante) was unanimously elected president of the Goiânia City Council for the 2027-2028 biennium. Following a single-ticket election, Guiotti stated his intention to strengthen the legislative branch's autonomy and its capacity to oversee the municipal executive, noting, “I am not a defender of the city hall, I am a defender of the councilors who are here to legislate and supervise.”
The election coincides with a significant leadership shift following the loss of mandate for councilor Aava Santiago (PSB). The Regional Electoral Court of Goiás (TRE-GO) unanimously rejected Santiago's appeals, upholding a decision that she lost her seat due to party infidelity after moving from the PSDB to the PSB.
As a result of the ruling, Michel Magul (PSDB) has taken office to fill the vacancy. While Santiago's legal team intends to appeal to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the transition of power in the chamber is proceeding with the election of a new Board of Directors, which includes Anselmo Pereira as first vice-president and Juarez Lopes as second vice-president.
