Chris Bryant bans disputed Orange Order parade in Northern Ireland

UK Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant has banned a controversial Orange Order parade through the Garvaghy Road in Portadown, ending a two-week standoff between Protestant marchers and nationalist residents. The decision follows a ruling by the Parades Commission that had, for the first time in nearly 30 years, permitted the procession.

Bryant stated the ban was necessary for public safety, citing advice from PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher that forcing the march would carry an “unacceptable risk of serious injury, disorder and a wider contagion effect.” While Sinn Féin leaders Michelle O’Neill and Mary Lou McDonald welcomed the decision as a relief for the local community, the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) criticized the move, arguing it undermines the rule of law.

Concurrently, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has launched a large-scale investigation into the protests that blocked the route. The police have issued correspondence to several Sinn Féin representatives, including First Minister Michelle O’Neill, inviting them to voluntary interviews regarding their participation in the demonstrations. O’Neill has confirmed she will cooperate with the investigation.
