Cyclospora Outbreak Sweeps U.S., Michigan Leads With Nearly 1,000 Cases

Health officials are investigating a multi‑state surge of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports more than 1,000 confirmed cases across at least 29 states. Michigan accounts for the largest cluster, with 992‑1,200 cases and 36‑40 hospitalizations, while Ohio has reported 177 cases, New York City 273 cases and the rest of New York State 121 cases. No deaths have been recorded.

The outbreak’s source remains unknown, but past cycles have been linked to fresh produce such as cilantro, basil, lettuce, raspberries, snow peas and pre‑washed salad mixes. Symptoms include watery, “explosive” diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, fatigue and low‑grade fever; illness can last weeks without treatment. The CDC advises thorough washing, scrubbing firm produce, removing damaged portions and cooking when possible. Treatment is a short course of trimethoprim‑sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim).
