Michigan Democratic candidate William Lawrence faces scrutiny over controversial remarks
William Lawrence, a Democratic candidate for Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, is facing scrutiny over a series of controversial social media posts and past statements. Lawrence, who founded the Sunrise Movement, recently posted on X that the nuclear family is an “isolating, individualistic, violent way of organizing society,” describing it as a “hetero-patriarchal” foundation for wealth accumulation.
Other documented remarks include Lawrence calling the United States a “shithole country” in 2021 and posting an upside-down American flag to signal that democracy is on the brink. On his 2024 podcast, he advocated for “destroying the American way of life” and the redistribution of all land and money to address the country’s “evil deeds.”
Lawrence is currently running in a highly competitive race against Republican Representative Tom Barrett. Despite his recent lapse in Democratic Socialist party membership, House Democrats have included Lawrence in their “Red-to-Blue” program, which provides support to top-tier candidates aiming to flip Republican-held seats.
