Taylor Farms linked to multi-state Cyclospora outbreak FAST-MOVING

A massive cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico has spread across 15 U.S. states, significantly impacting public health and consumer confidence. The outbreak has caused thousands of illnesses and at least two deaths, with Michigan serving as a major epicenter reporting over 12,000 cases.

The FDA investigation identifies shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico as the likely cause. Although an earlier positive test was retracted as a false positive, investigators maintain that epidemiological evidence and traceback studies point to Taylor Farms. The recall has involved hundreds of thousands of cases of lettuce, affecting major retailers like Walmart (Marketside brand) and restaurant chains including Taco Bell, Subway, and Jack in the Box.

In addition to the cyclospora concerns, Taylor Farms has also recalled various jalapeño-based products due to a separate salmonella outbreak linked to Coast Citrus Distributors. This has led to the removal of dips, salsas, and guacamole from retailers such as Target, Whole Foods, and Kroger.

The widespread nature of the contamination has led to a decline in fresh produce sales and a hit to consumer trust in the industry. Meanwhile, in the UAE, authorities have confirmed that no linked lettuce has been found in local markets and are increasing inspections of incoming produce shipments.
