Michigan parents indicted after child brings loaded gun to daycare
A three-year-old child brought a loaded Glock pistol to the Children’s World Early Learning Center in Canton, Michigan, after retrieving it from a backpack. Security footage shows the child sharing the weapon with other children before a teacher intervened and confiscated the firearm. No injuries were reported.
Prosecutors have indicted the child's parents. The father, a Detroit police officer, faces fourth-degree child abuse charges, which carry a potential sentence of up to one year in prison. The mother, who is the registered owner of the firearm, has been charged with insecure firearm storage, an offense punishable by up to 93 days in jail. Both parents pleaded not guilty in court, and a pre-trial hearing is scheduled for October 30.
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy stated that the case could have resulted in a much more severe tragedy. The Detroit Police Department has placed the father on administrative duty without firearm privileges pending the outcome of the investigation.
