Michigan reports first US deaths in cyclosporiasis outbreak
The United States is experiencing a large outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a diarrheal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recorded 6,707 laboratory‑confirmed cases and more than 11,500 suspected cases across 45 states since May 1, 2026. Michigan alone has reported over 11,000 infections and 193 hospitalisations.
State health officials confirmed the first two U.S. deaths linked to the outbreak, both occurring in Michigan. Medical records show the victims had significant underlying health conditions that were worsened by the infection and dehydration. While cyclosporiasis is rarely fatal, these deaths highlight the risk to vulnerable individuals.
Federal investigations by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have focused on shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms from central Mexico as a possible source, though testing of Mexican samples has been negative. The FDA also issued an apology after a false‑positive test on Taylor Farms lettuce. A voluntary recall of the lettuce was announced. The UK Health Security Agency has warned British travellers returning from Mexico after 67 UK cases were linked to the same region.
