Michoacán artisan competitions announced for Cuanajo and San Felipe de los Herreros
The Casa de las Artesanías de Michoacán (Casart) and the Fondo Nacional para el Fomento de las Artesanías (Fonart) are sponsoring local artisan competitions in two Michoacán communities to preserve traditional cultural techniques.
In Cuanajo, a prize pool of 120,000 pesos will be awarded to 26 participants across categories including traditional furniture, waist-loom textiles, and embroidery. Approximately 70 artisans are expected to participate. An exhibition and sale of works, including items like rebozos and various wooden furniture, will take place from August 26 to August 31.
In San Felipe de los Herreros, the 39th Local Artisan Competition will offer 80,000 pesos in prizes for 17 winners specializing in cotton textiles, embroidery, openwork (deshilado), and artistic blacksmithing. The event, scheduled for August 28, expects over 44 artisans and 72 registered pieces. The community will also host cultural activities such as cantoya balloon launches and regional culinary tastings.
