Artisanal heritage and Day of the Dead in Michoacán

Overview

Michoacán continues to expand its cultural celebrations focused on preserving artisanal heritage. Recent activities included the 25th Día del Artesano Michoacano in Morelia, which featured a parade on Avenida Madero and a traditional barter system known as ‘trueque’. During this event, Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla presented awards to 65 veteran artisans to recognize excellence in the field. The state also highlighted the economic impact of the sector, noting that the Casa de las Artesanías generated 78 million pesos in revenue over a five-year period. As the 2026 Day of the Dead season progresses, the state is launching promotional efforts to highlight both cultural and natural heritage, specifically targeting the arrival of the Monarch butterfly. Michoacán is participating as the invited state at ‘Ventana a México’, the first tourism promotion office of the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs in the United States, to connect with American audiences from October 26 to November 26. The state-wide celebrations are expected to include over 700 activities across seven tourist regions, featuring altars, gastronomy, and traditional workshops. In the community of Cuanajo, local authorities expect between 3,000 and 5,000 visitors from October 30 to November 2 for the K’etsitakua Ánimecheri tradition. This event features a monumental wooden horse structure, measuring eight meters high and nine meters long, which has been installed in the main plaza for 11 years to honor souls. Local organizers anticipate this will generate approximately one million pesos for community families. In Puruándiro, Mayor Víctor Vázquez has announced festivities starting October 30, including an Alebrijes contest and a ‘Caravana del Terror’. However, the Janitzio island cemetery will be closed to tourists during the Day of the Dead celebrations on November 1 and 2 due to ongoing rehabilitation following an August landslide.
