Michoacán security operation triggers widespread narco-blockades

A major federal security operation in Michoacán, aimed at capturing high-value criminal targets, has triggered widespread violence and road blockades across the state. President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the operation was launched to detain key organized crime figures.

During the maneuvers in municipalities such as Tanhuato and Ecuandureo, federal forces including the Mexican Army and National Guard detained nine suspected members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Among those captured are Marisol “N” and Lourdes “N”, identified as the daughter and partner of Heraclio Guerrero Martínez, alias “Tío Lako,” a regional leader for the CJNG. While the operation successfully secured weapons, vehicles, explosives, and drugs, Guerrero Martínez reportedly evaded capture.

In retaliation, criminal groups organized numerous 'narco-blockades,' involving the burning of vehicles and the use of heavy trucks to obstruct major highways, including sections of the Autopista de Occidente. These blockades affected several regions, including Zamora, Morelia, and La Piedad. Authorities have since worked to clear the roads and restore transit. Meanwhile, the state of Jalisco has increased surveillance along its borders as a preventive measure.
