Costa Rica Attorney General Carlo Díaz seeks reelection

Costa Rican Attorney General Carlo Díaz Sánchez has officially announced his intention to seek reelection for a four-year term, covering the 2026–2030 period. Díaz confirmed his decision during a media interview, stating that he intends to submit a formal request to the magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice.

Díaz, who has led the Public Ministry since October 2022, must communicate his interest to the Full Court by September 30. To secure the position, he requires the support of at least 12 of the 22 magistrates.

The announcement comes amid political tension between the judiciary and the executive branch. While Díaz recently received a performance rating of 98.95% for 2025, his administration has faced scrutiny and criticism from the government of President Laura Fernández and former officials regarding various investigations.
