Michoacán tourism and security updates

The Michoacán Secretary of Tourism announced that Janitzio Island will remain open for the Day of the Dead celebrations. While the cemetery is temporarily closed to the general public due to rehabilitation works by Fonatur, visitors can observe ancestral ceremonies from a new three-meter-high lookout point overlooking Lake Pátzcuaro. Cultural activities, including monumental altars and traditional butterfly catcher receptions, will continue on the island.

In Ocampo, the Desafío Monarca 2026 cycling event was converted into a recreational ride to ensure athlete safety following early morning rains. The event aimed to promote sports tourism within the Monarch Butterfly region.

Additionally, the Michoacán Civil Guard has integrated 40 new Ford Police Interceptor patrol units to strengthen highway security and emergency response capabilities.
