Michoacán prioritizes security funding and sea turtle conservation

Michoacán is implementing significant security and environmental initiatives. Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla announced an annual security budget of 5,834 million pesos, ranking the state fourth nationally in security investment. This funding aims to combat violent crime, particularly homicide, by targeting firearm trafficking. The state has reported leading the nation in firearm seizures, with over 1,185 weapons confiscated in 2025 through the Plan Michoacán. Additionally, Inegi data indicates the state has seen high rates of arrests related to organized crime.

In environmental news, Michoacán has established itself as a global leader in sea turtle preservation. A network of 27 turtle camps in Lázaro Cárdenas, Aquila, and Coahuayana protects various species, including olive ridley, leatherback, and hawksbill turtles. Following the successful release of 1.7 million hatchlings last season, the state aims to release 1.8 million this year. The program relies on 450 volunteers and the State Fisheries Commission to manage nesting sites and ensure biodiversity.

Separately, legal proceedings continue regarding local crime. Two men, Martín “N” and Federico “N”, were processed for weapons and drug offenses in Los Reyes de Salgado. Furthermore, a former municipal police officer in Parácuaro, Raúl “N”, has been linked to trial for the homicide of a 16-year-old.
