Michoacán Congress bans Uruapan mayor Grecia Quiroz and five officials

The Congress of the Mexican state of Michoacán declared Grecia Quiroz, the mayor of Uruapan, and five members of her municipal team "non‑grata," barring them from entering the state legislative building. The decision was announced by Baltazar Gaona, president of the Congressional Board, who said the officials were responsible for damage to the façade caused by a protest on 27 May.

The protest, organized by the "Movimiento del Sombrero," opposed a proposed electoral reform that would limit independent candidacies. Gaona described the movement as "very aggressive" and said the banned individuals would be attended only at the doorway: "No son personas gratas para el Congreso, sí se les va a atender, pero de la puerta hacia afuera."

The officials listed as non‑grata are regidor Víctor Hugo de la Cruz Saucedo, secretary of Public Works Esteban Constantino Magaña, secretary of the Ayuntamiento Arturo Ramírez Rivas, secretary of Tourism Emilio Herrera Cuadra, and digital communications officer Martha Alejandra Ávila Ortega. A formal complaint is being prepared and the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) will assess the cost of repairs.
