Michoacán prepares for arrival of thousands of sea turtles

The state of Michoacán, Mexico, is preparing for the seasonal arrival of thousands of sea turtles along the coasts of Lázaro Cárdenas, Aquila and Coahuayana. The State Fisheries Commission (Compesca) reports that the first turtles have already been spotted and expects nesting to intensify with the start of the rainy season, which provides the necessary sand moisture.

Compesca director Ramón Hernández Orozco confirmed progress on incubation pens, shade‑net installations and protection‑area maintenance for the 2026‑2027 season across the 25 registered turtle‑conservation camps. Volunteers and sanctuary staff are being recognized for their ongoing work at sites such as the Colola, Maruata and Mexiquillo sanctuaries, which host species including the green, loggerhead and leatherback turtles. Visitors are invited to observe the natural spectacle, while authorities advise caution at Playa Azul due to atypical currents and to follow lifeguard instructions for safety.
