Morelia launches modern cable car system to link 65 neighborhoods

The state government of Michoacán announced that a new cable car system will be built in Morelia, linking more than 65 neighborhoods across the city. Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and Secretary of Urban Development and Mobility María Elena Huerta said the project will directly serve 18,157 homes, about 51,559 residents, and improve accessibility for 2,777 people with disabilities.

The line will comprise seven stations – Estadio, Eduardo Ruiz, Primo Tapa, Obelisco, Ciudad Universitaria, Zoológico and Santa María – each covering a 500‑metre walkable catch‑area. Integration with the existing Morebús network is planned, allowing public‑transport service to run from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and to reorganise routes around the cable‑car corridors. Officials expect shorter travel times and expanded mobility options for thousands of Morelian families.

The initiative, presented at a press conference, is part of a broader effort to modernise urban transport and promote inclusive, sustainable mobility in the state capital.
