Michoacán releases nearly 5,000 leatherback sea turtle hatchlings

Coordinated efforts by turtle camps, volunteers, authorities and coastal communities in Michoacán resulted in the release of 4,795 leatherback sea turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) hatchlings during the 2025‑2026 season. The camps conduct continuous monitoring, nest protection, incubation and release activities to boost the survival chances of the species, which is the largest sea turtle and listed as endangered.

Ramón Hernández Orozco, director general of the State Fisheries Commission (Compesca), praised the participants and announced that the state government will strengthen support for the camps in the next season. Officials also urged beach visitors to avoid lights during nesting and release events and to respect the protected areas.

The release contributes to the broader conservation of the leatherback, a key species for marine ecosystem balance in the Pacific coast of Mexico.
