North Macedonia marks 35 years of independence amid political debate

North Macedonia is marking 35 years of independence through a series of national events and political discourse. Marija Miteva, a member of the VMRO-DPMNE commission, emphasized that the state's independence belongs to the citizens rather than institutions, describing the month-long celebrations as a significant organizational effort aimed at leaving a lasting cultural mark.

Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski highlighted the government's reform agenda, focusing on more efficient institutions and improved public services. He noted that the administration has worked to address issues inherited from previous governments, including infrastructure projects such as highways and railways, as well as hospital reconstructions and the decentralization of funds to municipalities.

In contrast, SDSM President Venko Filipce criticized the current pace of progress, stating that the country is losing time and entire generations. He compared North Macedonia's European integration progress unfavorably to neighbors like Albania and Montenegro, arguing that patriotic rhetoric cannot substitute for concrete results and successful reforms required for EU accession.
