Alta Bank license revoked by National Bank of Serbia
The National Bank of Serbia (NBS) has revoked the operating license of Alta Bank a.d. Belgrade following a significant deterioration in its financial condition and increased risk to depositors. The decision, made by the NBS Executive Board, follows control activities aimed at increasing the bank's liquidity. The bank's accounts were reportedly blocked as of October 30, 2026.
The Agency for Deposit Insurance (AOD) has been appointed as the bankruptcy administrator. The AOD is expected to enable the payout of insured deposits, up to 50,000 euros per depositor, within seven working days of the court's bankruptcy decision. While deposits are protected, debtors of the bank remain obligated to fulfill their existing loan and credit agreements.
The collapse has triggered political and financial scrutiny. Four NBS vice-governors have requested a prosecution investigation into the circumstances leading to the license revocation, noting that the bank's actual financial state differed drastically from the reports previously submitted to the central bank. Additionally, academics have called for increased border controls in the region to prevent the potential illegal outflow of cash following the incident.
