Micron Technology faces labor unrest in Taiwan amid AI-driven growth

Micron Technology is experiencing significant growth driven by artificial intelligence demand, with its stock rising approximately 261% since January. The company reported record fourth-quarter revenue of $54.23 billion, a 379% increase year-over-year. Analysts have responded positively, with Gil Luria raising the price target to $3,000.

However, the company faces labor challenges in Taiwan. In Taoyuan, union members have voted to pursue industrial action due to disputes over bonus systems and perceived lack of transparency in profit sharing. This potential labor unrest occurs as Micron expands its manufacturing footprint in Taiwan to meet the surge in demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and DRAM.

Broadly, the semiconductor sector is seeing massive investment. Taiwanese memory manufacturers are investing over NT$674.4 billion in expansion to combat anticipated shortages. ASML CEO Christophe Fouquet noted that the impact of AI on chip manufacturing is expected to persist for 10 to 15 years, signaling a long-term structural shift in the industry.
