Micron Taiwan labor dispute: Unions split over strike and settlement
A labor dispute at Micron Taiwan has led to a significant split between the company’s Taichung and Taoyuan unions. Following a period of negotiation, the Taichung union signed a confidential agreement with Micron on October 21, effectively ending its strike process. This agreement reportedly includes terms that could limit future collective bargaining rights, leading to accusations of betrayal from members.
In response, the Taoyuan union held a symbolic 24-hour strike on October 22, involving 11 union officials. The Taoyuan union criticized the lack of transparency regarding the Taichung agreement and questioned the role of the Ministry of Labor in facilitating the deal. Micron has stated that the Taichung agreement serves as a model for future negotiations, offering new quarterly profit-sharing incentives, increased performance bonuses, and improved benefits.
To counter the current situation, employees in both Taichung and Taoyuan are working to establish a “related enterprise union.” This new organizational structure would allow workers from both locations to join a single entity, potentially bypassing the restrictive terms of the existing Taichung agreement. Meanwhile, Taichung employees have successfully gathered enough signatures to demand an extraordinary general meeting to challenge the legitimacy of the signed settlement.
