Micron Technology faces labor tensions and competition
Micron Technology is facing a combination of market volatility, rising competition, and internal labor tensions. The company’s stock has recently undergone corrections, driven by investor skepticism regarding the pace of artificial intelligence infrastructure investment and increased competition from Chinese rival ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), which recently announced advancements in high-density DRAM architectures.
In Taiwan, a significant labor dispute is developing at Micron’s Taoyuan plant. Union members voted 99% in favor of authorizing strike action to demand a profit-sharing arrangement equivalent to 15% of operating results. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has called for good-faith negotiations between management and workers to avoid disruptions.
Despite these challenges, Micron reports strong long-term demand. At a recent facility inauguration in Taichung, Chief Operating Officer Manish Bhatia stated that the company’s capacity through 2027 is already fully sold, noting that the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) market is expected to grow through 2028, driven by the requirements of AI data centers.
