Micron Taiwan union secures strike authorization over bonus dispute

A labor union representing Micron Technology employees in Taoyuan, Taiwan, has officially secured the right to strike. Following a vote held from October 1 to 6, 2026, 1,994 members—representing approximately 99% of those who cast ballots—voted in favor of industrial action. This result significantly exceeds the legal threshold required for strike authorization.

The dispute centers on Micron’s bonus and compensation schemes. While the company recently announced fiscal 2026 rewards, including a T$1 million ($31,386) cash bonus for Taiwan-based staff, the union has rejected the offer. Workers are demanding a permanent, institutionalized profit-sharing mechanism that links compensation more directly to the company’s operating profits, which have surged due to the high demand for AI-related memory components.

Micron’s Taiwan operations are critical to the global semiconductor supply chain, serving as a major production hub for DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips essential for AI servers. A strike could exacerbate existing supply constraints in the memory market. While the Taoyuan union has secured strike rights, negotiations with the union representing Micron’s Taichung facility are still ongoing.
