Micron Taiwan labor dispute: Taichung union reaches deal, Taoyuan strike looms

Labor tensions at Micron Technology's Taiwan operations have seen a split outcome between its two major manufacturing hubs. The union representing workers at the Taichung facility has officially signed a labor-management agreement with the company, leading to the withdrawal of scheduled mediation proceedings.

The new compensation structure for Taichung includes a quarterly profit-sharing bonus consisting of 50% cash and 50% stock rewards for employees at the director level and below. This plan is tied to quarterly net operating income after accounting for capital expenditures, with payouts adjusted based on individual performance ratings.

In contrast, the Taoyuan union, which represents workers at one of Micron's most critical production sites for DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM), has not reached an agreement. The Taoyuan union has authorized a one-day warning strike scheduled for October 22 to protest the lack of a concrete, long-term profit-sharing plan. The union's action is intended to coincide with the Taichung mediation to increase pressure on management.

Industry analysts warn that disruptions at the Taoyuan plant could impact the global supply of memory chips essential for AI servers, as the facility is a key node in the production of HBM. Micron employs approximately 15,000 people in Taiwan.
