Mediterranean plastic pollution triggers environmental concerns in Turkey

Plastic and microplastic pollution in the Mediterranean Sea, particularly along the coasts of Antalya, Mersin, Adana, and Muğla, has become a significant environmental and public health concern. Lawmakers in Turkey have raised parliamentary inquiries regarding the impact of these pollutants on marine ecosystems and the rise in plastic waste imports from the EU and the UK.

Scientific studies indicate that microplastic concentrations in areas like Alanya have reached levels significantly higher than the Mediterranean average. Experts have warned that pollution in locations such as Konyaaltı Beach poses risks to public health, particularly for children and the elderly. Research suggests that high levels of plastic waste are being transported from inland recycling facilities in Adana and Mersin to the sea via rivers and rainfall.

The Zero Waste Foundation has announced field studies in four provinces to investigate the sources of this pollution and develop mitigation strategies. Additionally, a large-scale plastic workshop involving 14 ministries is planned for late August to address waste reduction, recycling capacity, and improved inspection mechanisms to prevent illegal dumping and mitigate the environmental burden of imported waste.
