Microplastics Detected in Human Organs, Study Links to Worsened Fatty Liver Disease

Researchers have confirmed that microplastic particles are present in major human organs, including the brain, liver and kidneys. The particles, often smaller than 5 mm, can enter the bloodstream via inhalation or ingestion and cross biological barriers such as the blood‑brain barrier, raising concerns about chronic inflammation and endocrine disruption.

A separate laboratory study in mice demonstrated that exposure to polyethylene microplastics exacerbates liver injury under a high‑fat diet, a model of metabolic‑associated steatohepatitis. The research identified heightened inflammation and disrupted cellular repair pathways, implicating the PPAR‑alpha/Anxa2 signaling axis. While the findings are based on animal models, they suggest a potential synergistic risk of microplastic exposure and poor diet on liver health.

Both studies underscore growing scientific attention to the health effects of ubiquitous microplastic pollution and call for further investigation into long‑term human impacts.
