Microsoft 365 reduces OneDrive storage for Family and Premium plans
Microsoft is implementing a significant change to its Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscription models by transitioning from individual storage quotas to a shared OneDrive storage pool. Previously, each of the six users in a Family plan received 1 TB of personal storage, totaling up to 6 TB per subscription. Under the new policy, all members will draw from a single, collective 2 TB pool.
This change is being framed by Microsoft as a way to provide “more flexibility,” allowing users who need more space to utilize unused capacity from other members. However, for large households that fully utilize their individual allocations, the reduction represents a 66% loss in total available capacity. To mitigate immediate data loss, Microsoft will grant affected subscribers a grace period of up to one year to delete, move, or purchase additional storage once the new limits take effect.
New subscribers and those upgrading their plans will be subject to these limits immediately. Existing subscribers will see the changes applied upon their first subscription renewal on or after May 2, 2027. While the storage capacity is decreasing, Microsoft is also expanding AI benefits, allowing Family and Premium subscribers to share Copilot and AI features with up to five other members.
