Microsoft 365 OneDrive storage policy changes

Overview

Microsoft is modifying its Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscription models by transitioning from individual storage quotas to a shared OneDrive storage pool. Under the new policy, the total capacity for these plans will be reduced to a collective 2 TB pool, whereas previously, up to six users could each receive 1 TB, totaling 6 TB.

Microsoft describes the move as a way to provide “more flexibility” for users to utilize unused capacity. While files remain private, the change represents a significant reduction in total available capacity for large households. New subscribers have been subject to these limits since October 8, 2026, while existing subscribers will see the changes applied during their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027. Microsoft 365 business subscriptions are not affected by this policy change.
