Microsoft advances AI agent ecosystem with AutoGen and AG-UI protocol
Microsoft is advancing its artificial intelligence agent ecosystem through the development of AutoGen and the release of a new .NET SDK supporting the AG-UI (Agent-User Interaction) protocol.
AutoGen is an open-source multi-agent framework designed to enable complex task solving through collaboration between different agents. It utilizes specialized roles, such as Assistant Agents for coding and User Proxy Agents to represent human users. The framework currently supports OpenAI models, utilizing GPT-4 for complex logic and GPT-3.5 for text generation. It also features an experimental EcoAssistant model designed to reduce costs by utilizing more efficient AI models when possible.
Complementing this, Microsoft has released a .NET SDK developed in collaboration with CopilotKit to standardize interactions between AI agents and user interfaces. This SDK, available via NuGet under an MIT license, implements the AG-UI protocol. The protocol uses an event-based structure to allow backend agents to communicate with frontend applications across eight categories, including lifecycle management, tool calls, and state management. The SDK provides both server and client components to facilitate bidirectional communication between agents and .NET applications.
