Expansion of Agentic AI standards and commerce protocols

Overview

The Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), managed by the Linux Foundation, continues to expand its ecosystem of open standards. Google’s Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol has joined the AAIF as a hosted project, moving under neutral governance to facilitate multi-agent orchestration. While the Model Context Protocol (MCP) standardizes how agents access data and tools, the A2A protocol focuses on standardizing how one agent delegates tasks to another. This development aims to provide enterprises with insurance against ecosystem lock-in as the foundation grows to over 250 members, including AWS, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI. To support this transition, the Linux Foundation has officially announced the Agent2Agent (A2A) Protocol Project. This initiative is designed to address the shift in enterprise API architectures necessitated by agentic AI. Unlike traditional applications with predictable workflows, AI agents operate dynamically based on goals. The A2A protocol aims to facilitate discovery, communication, and collaboration between agents across different systems, helping architects ensure that agents can execute actions within established security and auditing controls even when invocation patterns are not predetermined. Parallel developments in the financial sector are addressing the rise of agentic commerce, where autonomous AI agents perform transactions on behalf of users. To manage this, Visa, Mastercard, and Fiserv have joined the Agentic Payments Alliance (APA). Organized by the stablecoin infrastructure company Rain, the coalition is working to establish industry standards for AI agent identity, fraud prevention, and machine-to-machine payment frameworks. In the realm of multi-agent frameworks, Microsoft is advancing its ecosystem through AutoGen, an open-source framework designed for complex task solving via agent collaboration. Microsoft has also released a .NET SDK in collaboration with CopilotKit to implement the AG-UI (Agent-User Interaction) protocol.
